The Paperback Edition of Taming the Chaos of Dementia Has Arrived

When my husband Joe was living with Alzheimer's disease, and years earlier while caring for my mother with Parkinson's disease and dementia, I often wished someone had handed me a practical guide.

Not another book explaining the disease.

Not another list of statistics.

I needed someone to answer the questions caregivers ask every single day.

Why is this happening?

What can I do right now?

Is there something besides medication that might help?

Those experiences became the foundation for Taming the Chaos of Dementia.

Today I am excited to announce that the book is now available in paperback, making it more affordable and accessible for families, caregivers, students, healthcare professionals, libraries, and care organizations.

One of the most important messages throughout the book is that caregiving is not only about the person.

It is also about the environment.

The home, lighting, sounds, furniture, routines, nature, technology, meaningful activities, and sensory experiences all influence how someone living with dementia experiences the world. These non-pharmaceutical interventions often reduce stress while improving comfort, orientation, dignity, and quality of life.

My professional career has been devoted to creating healing environments in healthcare, while my personal life taught me what caregiving looks like around the kitchen table at two in the morning.

Those two worlds came together in this book.

My daughter, Dr. Sharon Pochron, brought the perspective of environmental science and research, creating a collaboration that bridges science and lived experience.

I am especially grateful for the response the book has received.

Booklist described it as:

"Helpful and uplifting."

The review recognized that dementia may become part of someone's story, but it should never define the whole person.

Whether you are a family caregiver just beginning the journey, a memory care professional seeking practical interventions, or a student preparing for a career in aging,

I hope this book offers reassurance that there are many things we can do to improve daily life.

There may not yet be a cure for dementia.

But there are countless opportunities to improve the experience of living with it.

That has always been the purpose of this book.

Thank you to every reader who has shared your stories, your questions, and your encouragement. Your experiences continue to inspire my work and reinforce the importance of creating environments that support dignity, belonging, and hope.

I hope this new paperback edition places these ideas into even more hands.

Whether you're a family caregiver, healthcare professional, student, or senior living leader, I hope you'll find practical ideas you can begin using immediately.

If you are caring for someone with dementia, you might feel like someone changed the rules of reality. Authors Barbara Huelat and Sharon Pochron support both caregiver and the person with dementia alike with nonpharmaceutical therapeutic interventions that target the miseries of dementia behaviors, triggers, and casualties induced by them.

Thank you to everyone who has supported this journey. I hope this paperback edition helps even more families discover practical ways to bring calm, dignity, and hope into dementia care.
